Human Service Workers at Safe Harbor Seasonal Emergency Homeless Shelter (October-April)

Safe Harbor Human Service Workers are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Safe Harbor seasonal emergency shelter. They are strong multi-taskers with sensitivity to persons with disabilities or who are disadvantaged. They are available to work scheduled rotating shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Safe Harbor shelter. Available to work scheduled rotating shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays and overtime as required.   

Primary Responsibilities / Essential Functions

  • Support the mission and vision of both Goodwill Northern Michigan and the Safe Harbor Seasonal Shelter. 

  • Perform work in a safe manner observing all Safe Harbor and Goodwill safety policies/procedures. 

  • Perform duties and interact with all Safe Harbor team members, clients, and Safe Harbor volunteers in a professional manner.   

  • Respect the diversity of others including, but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities. 

  • Knowledge and understanding of Safe Harbor’s policies and procedures. 

  • Follow and enforce with guests the protocols and policies to limit the spread of COVID-19.

  • Ensure the confidentiality of all persons served. 

  • Provide safe, dignified, and respectful environment for all persons served.  

  • Monitor guests in the shelter setting. 

  • Facilitate nightly intake process and exit of guests. 

  • Responsible for the accurate records of daily events data collection and HMIS data entry.  

  • Provide support and community resource information as needed. 

  • Maintain the security of the building and clients by following and enforcing established safety procedures. Responsible for the safety of all guests and visitors and compliance with Safe Harbor policies and expectations. 

  • Knowledge of emergency procedures to safely evacuate the building for emergencies or to move guests to a designated safe area according to established procedures as indicated in other emergencies. 

  • Assist or attend to an ill or injured person within certification guidelines after summoning professional 911 emergency medical care. 

  • Follow all Safe Harbor procedures for documentation of any injury or incident. 

  • Calls appropriate law enforcement agency in the event that personal or client safety is jeopardized. 

  • Monitor incoming and outgoing guests and visitors to the shelter.  

  • Attend trainings and staff meetings as scheduled. 

  • Other duties as assigned by Goodwill management staff. 

Reports to

Safe Harbor Seasonal Winter Shelter Manager 

Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required, some post-secondary education in human services field preferred. 

  • Basic First Aid  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. 

  • Knowledge and understanding of circumstances and issues of homelessness. 

  • Previous experience in counseling, human services, housing, substance abuse, and/or job placement preferred. 

  • Good phone etiquette, basic computer knowledge. 

  • Ability to multi-task. 

  • Ability to stay awake at night in a quiet environment.

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to persons with disabilities or who are disadvantaged.  

Physical Requirements

  • Standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, bending, kneeling, reaching, walking, walking on uneven surfaces, hearing, seeing, twisting, turning, and repetitive movement. 

  • Ability to do medium lifting, 20-30 pounds, and occasional heavy lifting. 

  • Direct contact with clients. 

Compensation

Safe Harbor Human Service Workers who work the 5 pm - 12 midnight shift make $16.50 per hour. Those who work the 12 midnight - 8:30 am shift make $19 per hour. The positions are full time and run from November through April. Full time positions offer benefits that include a retirement plan with match, group health plan, dental, vision, life insurance, and paid time off.
