8/21/19 — Let it Go!

The Final Days—Learning to let go

It doesn’t seem real.  Doesn’t feel like it is going to be this Sunday.  I have been focusing on this date for 13 weeks but doesn’t feel real.  It is soon enough to get a decent prediction on the weather (looks to be a good day!).  Am I ready?  Sunday will be the first time all 3 disciplines (Swim-Bike-Run) will be put together consecutively.  One after the other…short interlude between then off to the next one.

The hardest part is letting go.  It is out of my hands now.  I followed the plan and now I will find out whether the plan worked.

You would think this final week of tapering would be easy.  Workouts are scaled back, and you have more time to catch up on things that were put off for a while.

But is not.  Before it was easier mentally, because it was always something happening in the distant future.  I still had time to work harder, get my workouts in, and maybe add some practice in my weak areas.  Now there is not much I can do. I am in the shape I am going to be in for the race.  No changing that.  Now I need to eat well, get sleep, and get my taper work outs in. I have invested day in and day out for 13 weeks and now it is what it is going to be.

On race day, I need to do the race I practiced for.  I must do my race and not be thrown off by the other 2499 athletes who have their own race to do.  I have to trust my body, have fun, and (as I tell my daughters when doing something new and challenging)  enjoy, honor, and relish the moment as there will never be a 1st time again.  And let go!
