12/18/14 — Many Hands Make Light Work
Goodwill Partners with Community Meals to Feed Hungry Families
Community Meals, a holiday feeding initiative has been brightening homes with warm meals and good cheer in the Traverse City community for over 25 years. The program provides holiday meals to more than a thousand families in need every holiday season. This year, due to a change in culinary capacity, they needed some assistance ordering and cooking the food for their meals. Already partners in feeding northern Michigan neighbors, Goodwill gladly raised their hand to help out. “It was really a no-brainer for us (to help out),” says Brandon Seng, Goodwill’s Director of Food Programs, “we have the kitchen, we have the staff and volunteers, and we have the expertise to help in this way. There is no way we’re not going to help feed people on a holiday.”
Goodwill Northern Michigan is no stranger to cooking for large amounts of people in our community. As the meal provider for Meals on Wheels, Goodwill puts out hundreds of hot meals every day, in addition to feeding the hundred or so guests staying at the Goodwill Inn. “We’ve got our cooking processes down to a science, thanks to our committed staff,” remarks Seng, “we’ve got some people in our kitchen that have been preparing meals in these kinds of quantities for over a decade.”
This service by Goodwill allows Holiday Meals to assist more people than ever before, “We are committed to feeding our hungry neighbors, and Goodwill is definitely helping us do that this year,” said Gwen Stokes, coordinator of Holiday Meals. The initiative has seen local needs steadily increase over the past few years. “This year is critical to our effort to feed the need in our community. We feel fortunate to be able to help our community in this way,” added Stokes.
Goodwill has agreed to cooking over 1,000 pounds of turkey and a range of side dishes in their kitchen at the Goodwill Inn. They will then deliver the food to Trinity Lutheran Church, where meals will be passed out to community members in need.
