*Family and Children's Services

The Goodwill Inn's Family Services Program is staffed by a Family Case Manager and a Child Advocate provided by Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, Inc.

Team services provided to families and children include:

  • Family case management services to all families.
  • Individualized service plans for each family and each child
  • Respite for parents and children through the use of organized play and activities and limited daycare funding
  •  Assessment of educational and learning disabilities of both adults and children
  • Mentoring and tutoring of children by volunteers and professional agencies such as the Sylvan Learning Center
  • Counseling services for both adults and children (provided by local agencies)
  • Parenting and life skills classes such as budgeting, emotional management, self-esteem, vocational/employment, and stress management

SAFAH Program
Goodwill's SAFAH Program (Supplemental Assistance for Facilities to Assist the Homeless) began in 1992 and has provided a safety net for many at-risk families with children. The HUD-funded program is centered around intensive case management. Participating families are assessed carefully to identify any counseling, childcare, healthcare, or supportive service needs. Employment services are a key element in the SAFAH program. Clients are assisted with temporary work opportunities and are encouraged to enrich their employment skills and to become free of state assistance. The program assists in helping locate and secure permanent housing and includes assistance with housing search, furnishings, assistance with first month's rent and security deposit, moving assistance, and assistance with rent payments in emergency situations. Other limited financial assistance is available for auto repair, and medical or other emergencies. The SAFAH Case Manager and the Child Advocate follow families after their exit from the shelter, including home visits.
