Fresh Start Furnishings Now Available in Charlevoix
Goodwill’s newest transitional work experience offers a product line celebrating individual creativity and transformation
April 28, 2016 (Charlevoix, Mich.;) Shoppers on the hunt for GOOD finds and GOOD value at their local Goodwill store are about to embark on a truly one of a kind find at the Charlevoix Goodwill Retail and Donation Center. With the support of Goodwill Northern Michigan’s GOOD job training initiative, Fresh Start Furnishings offers a product line of re-imagined furnishings and textiles re-imagined by community members coming through transformation using re-purposed materials.
“Each creation represents a ‘fresh start’ for an individual on their journey toward independence,” said Cathy Cooley, Goodwill’s Mi Fresh Start manager. “Our program uncovers and utilizes the hidden talents, experience and artistic ambition found in individuals who may have lost their self awareness and/or confidence.”
This opportunity offers hands-on experience, refinishing donated furniture, sewing and tailoring custom pillows from up-cycled textiles. This 90 day paid transitional work experience, allows participants the opportunity to learn new job skills, build positive work history and gain valuable confidence.
“We take an innovative approach to workforce development including coordinating transitional work experience programs, pre-employment skills training and employment retention resource navigation support,” said Brandon Seng, Director of Workforce Development and Food Programs of Goodwill Northern Michigan.
Goodwill has the unique ability to offer participants paid training through transitional work experiences within their own organization’s programs in both retail and food programs which provide trainees the opportunity to transition into competitive employment in the community through our paid career exploration experiences.
A sampling of Fresh Start Furnishings will be on display at the Charlevoix Goodwill Retail and Donation Center located at 402 Petoskey Avenue starting April 27 with plans to expand. All furnishings and textiles on display are for sale and align with the Goodwill retail operation with each purchase, $0.91 of every dollar earned, reinvested into mission services to assist Northern Michigan neighbors in need with access to GOOD Jobs, Housing, and Food.
