Goodwill Northern Michigan Veteran’s Services Continues to See Positive Impactvs

In honor of Veteran’s Day, Goodwill Northern Michigan would like to salute the more than 100 local veterans that have relied on our organization’s Veteran’s Services to reestablish an independent life.

It’s through hard work, perseverance, and a hand up from Goodwill’s partners, that many of these honorable men have reached a sustainable quality of life, strengthening our community.

Over the last year, 48 veterans have been helped at Patriot Place, Goodwill Northern Michigan’s transitional housing community for veterans. Located in Gaylord, Patriot Place assists veterans who are experiencing homelessness, offering services ranging from providing basic needs, such as clothing and food, to personalized case management and housing solutions. Eighty-three percent of Patriot Place residents achieved a positive housing destination upon transition back into the community, surpassing the national average of 62 percent for veteran housing programs.

Finding the right combination of care, encouragement, and opportunity can be a challenge to assist this unique population. To address this challenge, Goodwill Northern Michigan partnered with the Veteran’s Administration to create Patriot Place in 2013.

Two years later, Patriot Place continues to take a personalized approach to veteran care in an effort to provide housing resources and community connections to achieve independence. We do this by securing applicable benefits from the Veterans and Social Security Administrations, connecting veterans to jobs and/or job training programs, assisting with permanent housing solutions, as well as providing customized case management support and referrals for for mental and physical disabilities (including PTSD).

Most veterans who turn to Patriot Place are from Northern Michigan’s larger communities, in and around Grand Traverse, Otsego and Emmet Counties – however, our doors are open to any qualifying homeless veteran, sent to us by the VA or other referral agencies in 29 Northern Michigan counties.

Patriot Place is one of the many veteran services along with job training and placement, and the Goodwill Inn, made available to veterans through Goodwill Northern Michigan programming.

Every cash donation you make, every donation to our stores and every purchase from our Gaylord Goodwill retail and donation center is reinvested into the communities we serve. In fact $0.93 of every dollar earned directly impacts our programming in Housing, Jobs, and Food.Goodwill, with the support of the community, empowers veterans in need to overcome barriers that led to homelessness and supports their path to independence and sustainability in our community.
